History

Professional Registry for the Northside, Inc. (PRN) is a registry for nurses, founded in 1974 by the late Mrs. Eileen M. Corrigan, RN, and the late Mrs. Martha H. Blackwell, RN.

Mrs. Corrigan was a graduate of the St. Joseph’s school of Nursing in Atlanta. She served in the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corp at the end of WWII. After her beloved husband Frank passed away early in their marriage, Mrs. Corrigan raised their five children by reentering the work force as a nurse, among other endeavors. She was quickly elevated to Director of Nursing at Kingsford Inn, a senior living facility in Atlanta. Mrs. Corrigan leaves behind a large family in Atlanta and surrounding areas.

Mrs. Blackwell was a graduate of Emory University School of Nursing. She worked in many areas of nursing and was well respected in the nursing/medical community. She and her husband Bernard raised two sons in Atlanta.

Mrs. Corrigan and Mrs. Blackwell both worked as private duty nurses at Piedmont Hospital. At the time, there was a tremendous need for nurses in hospitals as private duty nurses and as temporary staff. They saw the growing need for nurses in all areas which led to the formation of the Professional Registry for the Northside, Inc. (PRN), a registry for nurses in Atlanta. Their experiences as nurses provided a unique knowledge and understanding of healthcare and the nurses who were so desperately needed.

Today, the need for qualified nurses has only increased. The nationwide shortage of nurses has made the task more challenging. The company continues Mrs. Corrigan’s and Mrs. Blackwell’s personalized selection of nurses for referral to clients and organizations.

Mrs. Corrigan’s daughter, Eileen Corrigan Jones, RN, joined the company in 1997. She is a graduate of Emory University School of Nursing. Eileen brought with her a variety of nursing experiences. She helped the company navigate through the ever-changing medical environment to maintain the company’s mission and quality nursing care.

As our population ages and advances in medicine, there has been an increasing need for home care. This has resulted in the evolution of other services. In addition to Private Duty Nursing and Temporary Staffing, PRN offers Skilled Nurse Visits and Nurse Care Management.

A Legacy of Care

After Mrs. Corrigan’s death in 2013, Eileen found this photograph of her mother, hidden away in Mrs. Corrigan’s closet for decades. Eileen brought this photograph to PRN’s office, and it remains proudly displayed.

Mrs. Corrigan was a graduate of Atlanta’s St. Joseph’s Infirmary School of Nursing. It was here she entered the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps.

This photograph was taken in 1948, originally for Mrs. Corrigan’s mother who wanted a photo of the young Eileen in her nurse’s uniform. This photograph first appeared in the Atlanta Journal and subsequently was used to recruit student nurses for work.

Eileen began searching for vintage U.S. Cadet Corps Nursing posters that may have included this photograph. Although she has yet to find the photograph used on any WWII posters, she has a substantial collection of original nurse recruitment posters from WWI and WWII displaced in her office. Eileen believes this photograph was taken to recruit nurses for the U.S Cadet Nurse Corps, but the recruitment was coming to an end, so the photograph may not have been used for that purpose.

This is an original American Red Cross poster designed by Walter Seaton for the American Red Cross. It depicts a Red Cross nurse holding her hands out as if to ask for volunteers. She is posing with a billowing American Flag behind her.

This is Eileen’s favorite WWII original nursing poster. She found this on the floor in a junk shop with a broken frame, in Chamblee, Georgia. The owner of the shop apologized for charging five dollars for the poor condition of her find. Cleaned and restored, this original poster hangs in the reception area of PRN.
